Project Activities

The project team will assist the participating companies in activities such as workshops, training, individual consultancy assistance, analysis of sustainable business development potential, and implementation of action plan.
 

During this process, the buyers and suppliers will be able to engage each other on key elements of social and environmental issues and business. They will be able to share knowledge and experiences with other companies and experts within their business area.
 

Activities are divided into four main steps:
1) Needs assessment and action plan
3) Implementation of action plan
2) Training in India
4) Network activities in Denmark


In addition to these activities, a so-called SUSBIZ India Extension Programme is being developed with the aim of ensuring dissemination of knowledge and learning points to other SMEs in India.
By the end of the project, a report on best practices and tools for creating synergies between business development and social and environmental improvements will be published.
 




Needs Assessment and Action Plan

Experienced Danish and Indian consultants have analysed the Indian suppliers during an on-site needs assessment. Based on the needs assessment, each supplier has been provided with a report identifying the areas for improvement at their facility.
The needs assessments have revealed that development potentials are greatest within the following areas:

  • health and safety (ergonomics, ventilation/heat, dust, emergency preparedness)
  • worker standards (wages, working time, social security, worker involvement, communication and training)
  • energy and environment (energy savings, wastewater, handling of chemicals)
  • management and production planning

The project team and Indian facilitators have been assisting all suppliers in choosing specific target areas to work with during the project in order to facilitate improvements at their facilities. An action plan for the target areas chosen has subsequently being developed.
 




Implementation of Action Plan

Implementation of the action plan is closely coordinated with training activities at the suppliers’ factories, and will achieve great attention throughout the whole process. During the implementation process suppliers will receive individual assistance from the project team and the Indian facilitators. The objective is to provide visible improvements, making synergies between business development and CSR improvements evident to both suppliers and buyers.




Training in India

Training activities are organised partly as workshops, and partly as individual on-site training (the longest lasting two-three days, the shortest one day). Training modules in CSR (the business case for CSR, management systems, certifications etc.), health & safety, worker standards, productivity and production planning are provided to the Indian suppliers. The topics are selected on basis of an identification of common needs across companies. The workshops in India provide the companies with the opportunity of networking, while on-site training modules specifically address individual needs.


The Danish companies have been participating in one joint workshop in India together with the suppliers. The objective is to facilitate dialogue across companies and sharing of experiences.
 




Network Activities in Denmark

To facilitate dialogue and sharing of experiences among Danish companies, four joint network meetings in Denmark are organised. The main topic for the meetings is responsible supply chain management, where experts and frontrunner companies will be involved. This will allow the Danish companies to get a better understanding of how to work with sustainable business development in their supply chains.
